The company and it's products

What are Treko products?

We make freeze-dried outdoor meals designed in an environmentally responsible way.

How long has the company been in existence?

The company was born in November 2018 during the Startup Weekend of Shawinigan. It’s a business creation competition where teams have to create a fictitious company in 54 hours and then do a "pitch" of sales against judges. We won first place and then decided to start the project more seriously.

The company was officially incorporated on July 18, 2019.

What do you do that is different from the competition?
  • All our meals are vegan;
  • Made with ingredients from Quebec as much as possible;
  • The ingredients we use are grown in Quebec (e.g. we will never put bananas in our products);
  • We do not use any unpronounceable ingredients;
  • We freeze-dry 100% (no assembly);
  • We offer innovative products that stand out from the competition;

Where is your production space located?

The Treko meals are cooked in Saint-Narcisse, in Mauricie, using local ingredients as much as possible.

Nutrition and Allergies

How many servings in a bag?

All our sachets contain at least two servings.

Thus, a bag can be suitable for two standard eaters and a large eater will find his account with one sachet.

Comment les produits sont conçus ?

Initially, the dishes to be developed are chosen according to the availability of fruits and vegetables produced in the region of Mauricie and the surrounding area.

The selection and assembly of ingredients is done in order to obtain a product whose nutritional value meets certain criteria, especially with regard to proteins. All while making sure you have foods that are nutritious, filling and tasty. Suitable for people with diabetes.

Are your products gluten-free?

Some of our products do not have wheat, others do, but we do not have gluten-free certification, so we mention 'may contain: wheat' as a precaution.

Please always refer to the list of ingredients and consult a specialist if in doubt.

Preparation of products

Can we put hot water in the bag?

Yes.

Do I absolutely need boiling water?

No! All our products work with hot water only cold water.

Can the amount of water be varied?

Yes, no problem. You can add more water for a more liquid preparation or less to have something with less consistency. What is indicated on the bag is only a suggested quantity.

What is the cooking time?

Add only hot water and let stand. No need for extra cooking in a pot. Refer to the instructions on the package for more information on how to prepare freeze-dried meals.

Freeze-drying

What is freeze-drying?

Lyophilisation is the dehydration technique we have chosen for Treko meals. It removes moisture by cold, rather than heat, and preserves 95% of the nutrients, taste, color and texture of food. The process can take 40-60 hours to complete, but it’s worth it!

Interestingly, instant coffee and strawberries found in breakfast cereals are lyophilized products. This method is also used in pharmacy and for the preservation of historical documents.

How long does freeze-dried food last?

Under ideal conditions (well-sealed Masson pot with an oxygen absorber), a lyophilized product can be kept for 25 years!
